A. Research Interest
Inflammatory diseases including atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide. Diet, one type of lifestyles, regulates the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases. Inflammatory diseases are often delayed in populations consuming plant food-based diet compared to those receiving animal food-based diet. However, the effects and mechanisms for inflammatory disease protective effects of plant foods are not yet well established. Using preclinical trials our group have investigated the impact of chicory, one typical leafy vegetable in the Mediterranean Diet on inflammatory diseases, and observed that chicory could inhibit atherosclerosis development likely through its bioactive components protocatechuic acid and lactucopicrin. Currently, together with clinical and preclinical trials, we are evaluating the effects of chicory and its bioactive components on the risk or severity of atherosclerosis as well as inflammatory bowel diseases.
