Department of Health Policy and Management

History and Recent Advances
  The Department of Health Policy and Management (DHPM) was founded in 1986, formerly named the Division of Health Services Management. Its name was subsequently changed to the Social Medicine and Health Services Management Division (SM&HSMD) in 1990. In 2002, the SM&HSMD and the Division of Health Economics were merged into the DHPM. The Department is a member of China Health Economics Training and Research Network (CHETRN).

  The present chair of the department is Professor HUANG Cunrui (2015- ). The previous chairs for the Department were: Professor ZHOU Jiongliang (1986-1990), Professor YE Yurong (1990-1995), Associate Professor GUO Qing (Vice-Chairman 1995-1998), Professor CHEN Jinhua (1998-2003), and Professor CHEN Shaoxian (2003-2015).
Faculty
  The department has 14 faculty members, including 2 professors, 6 associate professors, 3 lecturers, 2 full-time researchers, and 1 research assistant. Among them, 1 professor was introduced by the national “Young Thousand Talents Program”, and 2 associate professors were introduced by the Sun Yat-Sen University “Hundred Talents Program”. The department mainly carries out research work in the following four fields: (1) basic health care, (2) health economics, (3) health policy and management, and (4) health response to climate change.
Teaching and Talent Development
  In 2000, the department launched its post-graduate education programme. Candidates can obtain a master-level degree in Social Medicine and Health Services Management by completing a three-year programme of study. In 2003, the department launched the doctoral-level programme in Health Policy and Management and the first cohort of PhD students joined in 2004. At present, the department undertakes teaching tasks for multiple courses, such as "Social Medicine", "Health Services Management", "Health Policy Analysis", "Health Economics", "Health Law", "Medical Security", "Hospital Management", "Health Promotion and Health Education". The teaching objects include undergraduate students in preventive medicine, 8-year undergraduate students in clinical medicine, 7-year undergraduate students in stomatology, full-time masters and doctoral students, masters in public health (MPH).

Scientific Researches
  In the past 5 years (2014-present), the department has undertaken more than 90 scientific research projects and accumulated more than 30 million CNY research funds, including 1 national key R&D project, 1 national “Young Thousand Talents Program”, 3 National Natural Science Foundation of China (General Program), 7 National Natural Science Foundation of China (Youth Program), 1 National Social Science Fund of China, 1 Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) Project, 4 China Medical Board (CMB) Projects, as well as more than 70 projects commissioned by governments and enterprises. The department has published more than 70 SCI/SSCI papers.

International Exchanges
  In the past 5 years, the department has successfully sent many young teachers to Yale University, Washington University, University of Florence and other overseas high-level universities for further study. The department has carried out joint training for graduate students with Washington University, University of Maryland, University of Glasgow, Queensland University of science and technology, and supported graduate students to participate in international academic conferences, such as International Society for Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE), World Congress on Health Economics.

  As the conference organizer, the Department has successfully organized a series of international and national academic forums, such as the International Forum on Climate Change and Health Response, the 2018 Healthcare Management Forum for Young Scholars &Young Committee Salon of CPMA Healthcare Management Branch, and the Healthy China Academic Forum.
